Barn Find Bikes Charterhouse Find New Homes

A Dorset barn has yielded a collection of rusted old motorcycles and spare parts which totalled over £20,000 when they went under the Charterhouse hammer on Sunday 10^th February.

“On the Saturday viewing day we had well over 1,000 people through the auction venue. It was quite interesting to see the reaction from everyone when they looked at the barn stored bikes. Some thought it looked like a load of scrap, and others were totally infatuated with them and couldn’t believe their eyes!” Commented Matthew Whitney. “We even had one buyer who had seen the collection 30 years ago in the barn and had tried to buy them, only to be told that the owner was planning to restore them, which sadly did not happen.”

All the motorcycles had been in the same Dorset family ownership for about 90 years, and only came to light after a bereavement in the family. Very much in a fresh to the market state and all requiring extensive restoration, the top lot from the barn was £12,000 for a 1923 Matchless with a side car. Selling for over double its lower estimate it was underbid by an American client. In addition to the motorcycles, there were also some spare parts such as a JAP 1000cc engine, again dating to the early 1920’s, which sold for £900. Most of the motorcycles and spare parts were purchased by one collector.

Elsewhere in the auction, which attracted nearly 400 people on the auction day, a Morris Minor Traveller, which is also affectionately known as a Tudor House on Wheels due to its half timber construction, sold for a strong £7,400, a 1973 VW Camper van sold to an internet bidder at £7,800. Fords were well represented in the auction, with a 1975 Ford Mexico selling for £9,100 and a 1970 Ford Cortina 1600E at £7,000. On a more modern Ford front, a 1991 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth Rouse 4WD caused a stir when it sold to a Devon museum at £9,500.

Mighty Mini’s at Charterhouse

 The Charterhouse auction of classic cars and motorcycles on Sunday 10th February includes a handful of Mini’s.
“The Mini has to be one of the most instantly recognisable motor cars ever made. Its revolutionary design by Sir Alec Issigonis led the car which was to become a motoring icon when it was first produced in 1959.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “Mini’s have always been popular at auction, no doubt aided by  a great supply of spares, an active club scene, their versatility and that they are just fabulous fun!”
The earliest of the Mini’s entered into the Charterhouse auction, which has nearly 50 classic cars and motorcycles, dates to 1962. This 850cc car has been in the same family ownership for 25 years and represents a fantastic opportunity to acquire an early low mileage Mini with good history at £8,000-9,000. At the other end of the scale, there is a rather special Mini. Having left the factory in 1970, it has now turned into a competitive sprint or hill climb car. Being highly modified, it is offered for sale £15,000-17,000, much lower than its build and development cost.
However, if you are looking for a Mini on a smaller budget, then the 1971 car, which has been a local car covering an average of  just 1,200 miles a year, could be your for £3,300-3,600. But for those of you looking for an interesting project, then a fully restored 1965 Mini Cooper S shell could be bought for £8,000-9,000. With fully completed Cooper S cars selling for over double the estimate, this represents a great opportunity for the lucky buyer.

Barn Find Bikes Discovered by Charterhouse

Every classic car and motorcycle collector dreams about coming across a barn full of old items, and Charterhouse Auctioneers have unearthed such a barn contents which will be sold their classic car and motorcycle auction on Sunday 10th February.
“It is a truly amazing discovery and the motorcycles have been amassed by one Dorset family. Ripe for restoration is a 1923 Matchless J Type motorcycle with sidecar, which has been in the same family ownership since new!” Commented Matthew Whitney. “We occasionally joke about old vehicles with one owner from new, but one family ownership for nearly 100 is the longest ownership I have ever come across.”
The Dorset barns are now being emptied due to their immanent sale after the passing of a family member. The 1923 Matchless pulled out of the barn has an 855cc vee twin engine which was a large engine in its day. In addition to this Matchless motorcycle, there are also several other large vee twin motorcycles from the 1920’s in barn find condition along with various spare engines, frames, tanks and other parts now looking to be restored. Rarely do such as these Pioneer motorcycles come on the market in original condition and they will represent a fantastic opportunity for collectors to buy a piece of early motorcycle history.

Car Auction is a Triumph

Soon the days will be getting longer and the sun will warm us all up more quickly. No doubt convertible classic cars will start to come out of their winter hibernation, like the bright yellow Triumph Stag going under the Charterhouse hammer in their classic car auction on Sunday 10th February.

“For many years the Triumph Stag has been associated with engine troubles. However, this tended to be for badly maintained cars – if you do not maintain any car you are guaranteed trouble!” Commented Matthew. “And I should know as I have owned several Stages over the years all of which have provided comfortable drop top classic car driving with the burble of their V8 engines.” 

The 1972 Yellow Triumph Stag finished in Mimosa yellow has undergone an extensive restoration process. It is fitted with the very desirable manual gearbox with overdrive in 3rd and 4th gears for touring and extra economy. Having been owned by the vendors for the last 7 years, it is now up for auction due to lack of use, having covered only 300 miles in the last 3 years. Estimated at £6,000-7,000 it will provide it new owner with plenty of smiles per miles.

Little Car with a Big Price

A 1966 Mini Cooper sold for double its estimate at the Charterhouse sale of classic cars at The Royal Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet on Sunday 4th November.

“This Mini Cooper had all the right ingredients to bring big bucks on the sale day and it did not disappoint. It was recently pulled out of a garage in near Bournemouth where its first and only owner put it into back in the hot summer of 1976. He worked on cruise ships and as a result was often away at sea which resulted in it travelling just over 22,000 miles in 10 years.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “Despite the sale day morning starting with snow and flooding, there were several hundred buyers at the auction along with telephone and live internet bidders. Bidding on the Mini started at £8,000 and quickly climbed to £16,000 when the hammer fell to a collector of Mini’s.”
Elsewhere, in the auction, a Jaguar E Type Roadster sold for £28,000, a 1972 Vanden Plas 1300 £4,500, a 1970 MG 1300 £4,000, a 1978 Karmann Beetle cabriolet (left hand drive) £6,000, a 1937 Morris 8 £5,300, a 1960 MGA roadster £16,500, and a 1966 Ford Transit £3,000. Requiring restoration were a barn find 1935 Armstrong Siddeley which sold for £2,700, a Rover 12, again another barn find, £2,300 and a 1930 MG M Type Le Man replica, requiring finishing for £7,200.

A Mini Miracle at Charterhouse Classic Car Auction

A time warp one owner Mini Cooper is one of the star cars in the Charterhouse auction of Classic & Vintage cars on Sunday 4th November at The Royal Bath & West Showground.
“It is probably the most important Mini Cooper I have been instructed to sell.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “It was purchased new in 1966 from Stringers in Portsmouth by Mr Smith and he drove it until the hot summer of 1976 when it was driven into the garage where is did not turn another wheel until earlier this year when relatives started to clear his house after he passed away. Making amazing discoveries such as this is what being an auctioneer is all about, but on this occasion it was in a Christchurch domestic garage rather than a farmyard barn on the middle of Exmoor. ” 
Mini Coopers are synonymous with the swinging sixties and an icon of British motoring. However, what is so special about this particular Mini Cooper is that it has only covered 22,270 miles over the past 46 years. So often classic Mini’s have covered intergalactic miles or had panels and engines replaced, but this Cooper is a matching numbers car in totally original condition. During the 1960’s and 1970’s Mr Smith worked on cruise ship which explains why the car never travelled far.
Over the past few years, Mini’s  have steadily risen in value and Charterhouse have had some outstanding Mini results including a Mini pick up sold for £8,200, a Mini custom van sold for £12,200 and a late model 1995 Mini Cooper with just a few hundred miles £12,500.

Classic Convertibles at Charthouse Car Auction

A trio of classic convertible cars are entered into the Charterhouse auction of Classic & Vintage cars on Sunday 4th November at The Royal Bath & West Showground.
“Having been robbed of a summer this year, a good deal of classic car owners are looking forward to an Indian summer in the autumn. They are continuing to enjoy their classic convertibles by dodging the showers with their top down!” Commented Matthew Whitney. “Over the past few years, the classic car market has enjoyed buoyant times and we have a large following across the continent and state side due to the exchange rate and low shipping costs. In addition, all our classic car auctions are conducted live on the internet with UK and foreign buyers bidding in real time pushing the price up.” 
Amongst the numerous lots already entered into this specialist Charterhouse auction is a trio of convertibles. First up is a 1937 Morris 8 with a Dickie seat. Benefiting with a recent hood, this super little car is estimated at £6000-7000. Next up, and with the same estimate, is a 1978 classic VW Beetle convertible. In immaculate condition, this iconic piece of motoring history is ready for continental holidays as it is a left hand drive car.
