Classic Car Auction is a Marathon

Charterhouse is well known for selling classic and vintage cars and motorcycles. Over many years, they have sold exclusive vehicles, many of which have been high end brands, but they also like to spice their auctions up with a variety of lots and their 21st July auction is no exception as two coupes are no doubt set to appeal to very different car collectors.

“In the July auction, we have two classic car coupe designs. First up there is the sleek and iconic 1970 Jaguar E Type coupe, with its powerful 4.2 litre engine and never ending bonnet.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “And then we have a 1974 Daf 66 Marathon coupe with its not so powerful 1.3 litre engine. However, to collectors, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and with this being such a rare little survivor combined with its recorded mileage of just 21,000 miles in nearly 40 years, it will have just as many admirers as the Jaguar.”

Both this coupes are entered into the Charterhouse auction of classic and vintage cars being held in a marquee in the grounds of Sherborne Castle on Sunday 21st July. The Jaguar E Type is estimated at £20,000-25,000 and the cheeky little Daf 66 Marathon coupe £3,000-5,000.

Charterhouse is now accepting further entries into the auction. Bristol Pops Up In Devon

A classic Bristol motor car has been pulled out of a garage in Devon by Dorset based Charterhouse Auctioneers, 20 years after the owner drove it in with a view to starting a programme of restoration.

“The name Bristol is synonymous with great design and superb engineering. No surprise when you consider Bristol Motor Cars evolved from a company who made aircraft such as the Blenheim and Beaufighter during World War Two.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “All Bristol Motor Cars were desirable and expensive in their day, and moving forward into the 21st century, they are highly sought after by collectors. However, what makes this Bristol particularly rare is its special aluminium body made by the legendary Italian design house Zagato of Milan.”

This Bristol originally started out in life as in 1949 as a standard Bristol 400. Then in 1957, it was delivered to Zagato for a special lightweight aluminium body and numerous upgrades such as disc brakes all round and triple carburettors which pushed engine power and performance up on a standard 406. It returned to England in 1961 when it was owned by Antony (Tony) Crook, a Director at Bristol. It was used, possibly as a demonstrator, until sold in 1962 and sold again to the current owner in 1965. Bristol records show that three 400’s were given this treatment by Zagato, as well as six new 406’s, but it appears that the Charterhouse car is a previously unrecorded chassis. To prove just how exclusive the Bristol 406 Zagato was, they were twice as expensive as a new Jaguar E Type!

During the owner’s professional career in the Civil Service from the 1960’s, he took his beloved Bristol Zagato wherever he worked. The car still retains documentation and number plates from a posting in Libya, during which time it was driven across the Sahara desert. Last driven into his garage in Devon some 20 years ago, the keys still remain in the ignition. Now, with a few panel sections removed from a restoration started many years ago, this very rare Bristol 406 Zagato is entered into the Charterhouse auction of classic and vintage cars being held in a marquee in the grounds of Sherborne Castle on Sunday 21st July, where it is estimated to sell for £10,000-20,000.

Just 7,000 Miles and Two Families in 89 Years

One of the star cars, in the Charterhouse auction of classic and vintage cars being held at Sherborne Castle on Sunday 21st July, is a 1924 AC Anzani with less than 7,000 recorded miles.

“It is a truly amazing and unique piece of motoring history entered into this specialist classic car auction. So often we hear half truths about cars with long ownership and low miles, usually careful lady or vicar drivers, which we take with a pinch of salt, but in this case it is all true.” Commented Matthew Whitney. “In addition, AC motor cars have had some great exposure, primarily due to a similar 1927 AC being driven and crashed by Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey!”

Purchased new by Mr Rice in 1924 this AC was first shipped to India, only to return to England 6 months later after the owner died. It then passed to Mr Rice’s sister who put just 5,705 miles on it before selling it to Mrs Pearce in 1958. She bought it for her 16 year old son, who was initially too young to drive it, and with whom it has remained with ever since.

Retaining its original polished aluminium body, this incredibly rare and unique piece of motoring history, having been in the same ownership for the past 55 years, and having been owned by just two families for nearly 90 years, is estimated at £18,000-22,000 in the Charterhouse auction.
